I expected to have my nerves under control for the first round of the competition considering Iâd already been here and theyâd clearly deemed my food good enough at the audition but it was exactly the opposite.
My arms and fingers tingled with a kind of condensed anticipation that made me desperate to cut some things to calm myself. Vegetables, preferably.
A crew member escorted me through a red door and allowed me into a different lounge than last time. Three other demons were already waiting in the couches, the nervous energy coming off of them making it clear they were contestants too. My rivals.
I sat in a single-seater, greeting the others with a vague nod. I didnât recognise any of them but I was determined to find out what restaurants they worked at so I could research them when I got home. Then Iâd have a better idea of who I was up against.
The door opened and another contestant arrived, a bulky man with sluggish movements but keen eyes. I could feel his gaze linger as he checked us all out before he sat on another couch.
So far, nobody had said a single thing. This was going to be boring footage.
I resisted the urge to fiddle with the microphone taped to my body, the cables mildly annoying. I hadnât considered how uncomfortable this whole process would be, with the extra make-up and a chefâs jacket that didnât properly fit. Although I had to admit to liking the DemonChef logo on my apron.
Another demon arrived, a woman with her hair in two tight braids and a darker complexion. âHello, everyone. Looks like Iâm the last one here, huh?â
I mumbled a confirmation together with the others.
She seemed somewhat disappointed at the lacklustre response and sat down, drumming her fingers on her knees while she joined us in the excruciating wait. âDoes anyone know how many of these first rounds there are?â
âEight,â a male demon with a unibrow replied curtly.
Which meant forty-eight chefs in total, all hoping to get through to the next round. If they were following the same pattern as last time, theyâd eliminate half of us. That was a lot of people who had to go home.
I gulped, tugging on the tight collar of my uniform in an attempt to loosen it. I could very easily be in the unlucky group if I didnât cook better than the other five demons in this room. No, I only had to be better than three others. It would be amazing to be the best every round but that was an unrealistic expectation. As long as I got through, I could make it to the top.
A crew member entered, making us all sit up. âPlease line up in this order. Benedict, Shari, Ray, Lana, Pedro, Justin. The order in which you enter will be which bench you go to. Stand on the cross and face forward. Refrain from chatting between yourselves. If you mess up the entrance, weâll have to shoot it again.
